1 King Harold II. This modern statue at the west end of Waltham Abbey represents the association of the Godwinson family with the abbey. It is claimed that a coffin was found with the inscription ‘Here lies the unfortunate Harold’. If this is the resting place of Harold’s mortal remains then they have been moved three times. However, the church at Bosham also makes a good claim to be the place where Harold was buried after his death at Hastings.

2 In Holy Trinity Church at Bosham a large stone coffin was found about a metre from this grave during building work in April 1954. The remains in the grave are missing a leg and the head. As such, the remains are consistent with those of king Harold. The birth and death of this daughter of Cnut are not recorded but she might have been a daughter of Cnut’s first love rather than his wife Emma. Local tradition reports that the child died by drowning.
